Budding

Budding is a method of asexual reproduction that Transformers use. Primus originally allowed it, that his children might multiply. However, after a time, Primus decided that he had plenty enough children and caused his children to forget how to bud.

However, some either remembered or rediscovered to bud and continued to do so. Budding past Primus's intended limit watered down the divine lifeforce within them. Later generations of G2 Cybertronians would be nearly soulless if not completely so. It also had the unintended side-effect of generating the Swarm.

Budding is depicted as an extremely painful process for the parent Transformer, with electricity crackling over his or her body and great boils rising upon the surface of his or her armour. The offspring Transformer would be generated fully adult and aware and would not necessarily look like the parent. Later generations show more teal and silver to their colour schemes and sometimes yellow, red, or horns. One depiction of budding showed the prospective Transformer surrounded by kneeling Transformers, and to an uninformed observer, budding looked like punishment.

It is not indicated if budding is a conscious act or something that happens involuntarily.
