Characters

The only characters available to players at this time are Transformers and attached characters (*master partners). However, you can play a Transformer from any series and from up and down the timeline of the series that you pulled from, or an original character from up and down the timeline of any series. See the FAQ for the limitations on 'any'.

How are characters getting into the Deadzone?

You don't know what's pulling Transformers into the Deadzone universe, but periodically, new Transformers will pop up on one certain, abandoned alien world. They come from all over the multiverse where Transformers dwell, and sometimes from different points in the same timeline as someone else.

There is an application process to get characters on this RPG. It's not too complicated - fill out the app, submit, and wait for a yea or nay - but there is the possibility that the admins will ask you to make changes to your app before we accept it. We will always provide reasons why for these changes, and we are open to polite discussion and more exhaustive justifications for why something should remain unchanged. However, when it comes down to the line, no means no.

Original Character applications are, in a way, more difficult to get approved than canon applications, as their power levels and unity of character concept tend to get watched more carefully (canon characters come with concept and power levels built in).

All Characters

  • You may not play both halves of a pairing. For example, you may not app both Skywarp and Thundercracker, and then do a Skywarp/Thundercracker sexual relationship with them. We encourage you to write slash fanfiction instead, because we like fanfiction. However, watching you cyber is boring to the rest of us.
  • You may start with a very powerful character (Jhiaxus, a Prime, a 'tron, etc.), but if you want any further powerful characters, you will also have to app a low-powered or normal-powered character. These normal or low-powered characters must be kept as active as your more powerful characters, if not moreso.
  • Unless you are applying for an original character, please do not use fanfiction as a characterization source. It's more likely to weaken your application than strengthen it, no matter how good the fic in question is.
  • In order to ensure that a player can handle all their characters in play before granting a new one, we ask that a player wait 21 days after the approval of their previous character before applying for a new one. If you don't remember when you sent in your last application, feel free to ask an admin and we'll look it up for you.
  • The Skills Leadership, Tactics, and Strategy are among the most requested in the game and are now considered overdone. They require above-average justifications, especially for the higher levels. The same applies to non-technical characters asking for Repair.

Canon Characters

  • No incarnations of G1 Optimus Prime or G1 Megatron.
  • No leader-type characters unless you explain how that character would fit into the current rank situation in the Deadzone.
  • Players may not play more than one combiner component from the same team.
  • Characters may come from any point in the canon timeline they're pulled from. For example, you could app for a G1 cartoon Starscream from when he was out exploring the universe with Skyfire.
  • By the same token, if you can provide a reasonable future for a character beyond where we've seen them in canon, you can pull them from that point in time, as well. For example, a depressed Omega Supreme from after the Great War would be acceptable. Omega Supreme as a stripper after the Great War would not.
  • Extra incarnations of a character will be harder to get as they propagate. So the more Starscreams there already are in play, the harder it will be to get a new one.
  • Keep in mind that the admin will look at your character applications with the idea that someone else may play the character someday. Therefore, do not put in wtf-inducing skills, stats, or personality changes.

Original Characters

We do allow original characters, though they require a longer app than canonical characters do. We would prefer you to start the game with a canon character so we can get a measure of you as a roleplayer, but this is not required. Proven roleplayers are more likely to get 'tough sell' characters approved, though.

  • No melee-centric characters from a non-melee-centric series.
  • You may not pull characters from a fan-universe. This is not to say that you may not use your OCs from your fanfic, but that it can't be entirely different from the canon of the show. As an example, the Voidverse AU where Hot Rod got corrupted into a servant of Unicron isn't open for pulling characters from. This is to prevent drama if the creator of that timeline later on decides they do not want stuff from their timeline to be involved in this game.
  • There will likely come a point where it is just as reasonable for OCs to be built by canon characters already in the Deadzone universe as for them to be abducted from outside said universe. If this happens, you must get permission from whomever is playing your canon creators before creating that character. You must also explain their creation plot in the application.
    • If a new player picks up your canon creator, we will not retcon out that he created you. But the new player will not be required to keep up the same relationship with you as the previous player did. For example, Hook 1 builds Genesis and is stuffy and vaguely paternal towards him. Hook 2 wants nothing to do with him. Hook 3 is a soccer mom. All of these interpretations are allowable.
  • No sparklings. No Transformers doing live birth. No Transformers laying eggs. (Unless they're Beast Wars characters, and you have permission from the admins.)
  • Currently, overly ruthless and Decepticon-like Autobots are overdone and will require a very good justification. The same applies to exceedingly jerky Autobots or anti-authoritarian Autobots.

Dependent Characters

Some characters come with other characters naturally attached to them. Soundwave has his cassettes, Needlenose has his Targetmaster partners, Hot Shot has his mini-con. If you want to play these dependent characters, you may do so. However, you may only have up to four of them in a given scene at a time.

If another player decides that they want to play a cassette, *master partner, or partnered mini-con, they should ask the player of their partner if they can have that character, then app said character. Yes, there's an added layer of potential denial in this process, and we're sorry about that.

If you want to play a cassette or normally partnered mini-con without the larger Transformer in play, just app them normally.

Plot Characters

A plot character is any character that would unbalance the game as a normal character but who could be enjoyable for a short arc with the possibility of sequels at a later date. Also, any character that is available temporarily for a plot and then gone would be a plot character.

If you are interested in playing such a character, please read the full rules for them here.

Canons Not in Play

The admin need some idea of the canon you're applying for, but other than that, anything that's already in existence is fair game. You do not need to help us build up a timeline for canons not currently listed in our Library Data. We'll do that when we get around to it.

All right, where's the application?

The application is right here.

If there are both comic and cartoon versions of a given series, specify whether your character is from the comic or cartoon.

Please send your applications in plain text only in the body of the e-mail to deadzoneapp@gmail.com with the subject "OC/FC - Character Name - Character Faction - Series". (Use 'OC' if you're submitting an original character, and 'FC' if you're submitting a canon character.) Note: Our typical turn-around time for applications is 3-5 days.
